‘In the form of his life’ – Paul Nicholls tells Nicky Henderson and Shishkin bring it on in the Betfair Chase

PAUL NICHOLLS has thrown down the gauntlet to Nicky Henderson and Shishkin in Saturday’s Betfair Chase.

The Ditcheat boss says the 162-rated Pic D’Orhy is in ‘the form of his life’ ahead of the blockbuster Grade 1 contest.

Shishkin is on the ultimate recovery mission having bombed out in the Champion Chase.

And he finished 15 lengths behind the impressive Edwardstone in the Tingle Creek when last seen.

Both currently play second fiddle to 7-4 market leader Fakir D’oudairies.

But a bullish Nicholls is certain his charge is the one to beat for the £100,000 first-place prize having won his last three races by a combined 20 lengths.

Nicholls told Betfair: “Since his younger days I’ve always been convinced that he would make a smart chaser.

“There were some hiccups along the way but he has really come good this season and has earned a shot at this Grade 1 prize after winning Grade 2 races on his last two starts.

“Pic D’Orhy is more mature now, comes to Ascot in the form of his life and has a lovely chance.”

The eight-year-old owned by Johnny de la Hey will be partnered by Harry Cobden for the fourth time this season and is 11-4 with the race sponsors.

Betfair Spokesman, Barry Orr, commented: “The big three have stood their ground and it’s set fair to be a competitive renewal of the race.

“Last year’s winner, Fakir D’Oudairies, has been favourite throughout and still heads the market, but he’s 7-4 from 5-4.

“Shishkin has been strong at 2-1 and punters appear keen to give him another chance now he’s stepping up in trip.

“Pic D’Orhy is 11-4 but has to prove he can do it in Grade 1 company.”
