But his bold choice paid off as the numbers came in – meaning he won the jackpot six times.
A spokesman for Massachusetts State Lottery said: “Raymond Roberts Sr. of Fall River is the winner of six $25,000 a year for life prizes in the multi-state Lucky for Life game after matching the first five numbers on six tickets he purchased for the drawing that took place Wednesday, December 14.”
Raymond decided to take a lump sum for five of the winning tickets, landing him a cool $390,000 (£319,523) five times, totalling $1,950,000 (£1,597,615).
For the six tickets, he opted to go for the $25,000 (£20,482) per month for life.
Asked why he had made the odd decision to buy six tickets the same for the Lucky for Life drawing at the Royal Liquors store in Fall River, he described it as “intuition”.
He added that he felt good about the numbers as they were a combination of anniversary dates and birthdays.
Raymond also admitted he had been feeling good about the numbers for more than 20 years and it was finally time for the big payout.
He said he planned to buy himself a brand-new motorbike and take to the road before planning what to do with the rest of it.
Raymond is not the only winner, as the shop keeper who sold the ticket will get a $5,000 (£4,100) bonus per ticket.
It comes after a British hairdresser scooped a massive £2.2million jackpot after playing for only the second time in her life.

And Inger was stunned to find out she won a huge £2.2million in the draw.
