Richards, 35, was appearing on the Rest is Football podcast when he was asked about the origin of the nickname.

However, before he could answer, Lineker, 63, said he was a “little bit nervous about the answer”.

Co-host Alan Shearer, 53, also chimed in with a warning to Richards that “children could be listening”.

Richards then explained: “Well, there is a PG version, and that version is, I think, self-explanatory.

“I’ve got big guns [arms], a big chest and a six-pack for about ten years so yes that is why they call me Big Meeks.

“I think it was Joe Hart who said it from when we was young and it just stuck.

“Then everyone just started using it.”

He continued: “No word of a lie people always ask me that ‘why do call yourself Big Meeks?’.

“I don’t call myself Big Meeks, people call me Big Meeks.”

Lineker then interrupted, joking: “You’ve called yourself Big Meeks loads of times on this podcast.”

Richards then said: “Yeah, but Big Meeks is like a caricature of one’s self.

“Big Meeks is not a real person. Big Meeks is like a version of one of my personalities that comes out when I am on TV.

“And sometimes it really comes out.”

To which Lineker replied: “Too much information.”

During the podcast, Shearer also predicted a stunning career switch for Manchester United star Mason Mount.

The former Newcastle star believes that Mount could have a career as a presenter after he was impressed with his skills in reading off of an autocue.
