I’m former US Open star who gave up sport to became hotel owner – I even rent out luxury tennis-themed apartments

AGNIESZKA RADWANSKA may have closed the door on tennis but is now helping renters through the front door.

The former Polish tennis star, 34, reached No2 in the world rankings following her run to the 2012 Wimbledon final.

Radwanska lost to Serena Williams on Centre Court that day – the closest she came to winning a senior Grand Slam after winning the junior Wimbledon in 2005.

She made two Australian Open semis and a quarter-final at Roland Garros – but never went beyond round four at the US Open.

A WTA Finals champion and Hopman Cup winner, Radwanska racked up a staggering $27.6million in career prize money and 20 singles titles.

Her popularity was clear to see – she was crowned WTA’s Fan Favorite for six years in a row from 2011 to 2016 and won five straight Shot of the Year awards.

However, she was forced to announce her shock retirement aged just 29 in 2018 due to her ongoing injury troubles.

A year earlier, though, she had already taken her first steps into a career after tennis by launching her own hotel of unique luxury apartments in Krakow.

The initial idea was raised by Radwanska’s mum, who had to travel for three hours to visit her daughter in Warsaw, and Marta still does lots of the day-to-day running of the company.

As well as spending an estimated 3,000 nights in hotel rooms around the world during her tennis career, Radwanska drew on her experience from studying tourism in Krakow for her AGA Tenis Apartments.

Now the ex-tennis star rents out the ten modern apartments for short-term rentals.

Each flat is kitted out with tennis memorabilia and has its own geographical theme: Singapore, Miami, Sydney, Tokyo, Istanbul, Montreal, Beijing, Dubai, Tianjin and, naturally, Wimbledon.

Radwanska told the WTA website: “The global designs were my mom’s idea.

“You don’t see that anywhere. I’m the first player to have the hotel featuring the different cities. I’m happy that I can be the first one. It’s something nice for the people. Hotels can be the same everywhere, and this is so different.

“There’s an energy there, and you can see how my career was. A lot of souvenirs, things I got at the tournaments, the rackets, the balls.

“I’m always happy that people keep coming back. I tell people, ‘You can always try a different city each time.’”

Radwanska added: “After staying in hotels your whole life, you see things from the other side.

“Before, as a guest I was asking questions and maybe sometimes complaining. Now you’re listening to the problems and trying to make the guests happy.

“You never know how it’s going to be, especially because it’s a hard business. Krakow is a tourist city. It has so many hotels and apartments. But the idea was to try something new. It was a big change.”

Away from sport and business, Radwanska is married to former Polish tennis star Dawid Celt.

The couple tied the knot in front of a host of fellow players in July 2017 and welcomed their first child, son Jakub, three years later.

She has also pledged thousands of dollars to charity over the years and even volunteered with her sister and fellow tennis player Urszula to support Polish charities to support the less fortunate in society.
