The mechanic pro, who shares tips and driving advice on social media, shared the easy hack in a YouTube video.

Scotty recommends to use one common but overlooked item that could save you a trip to the garage.

On the clip he said: “Today I’m going to show you how to properly jumpstart a car.”

All you need to fix a dead battery is a couple of jump leads.

He explained: “You take the positive end of one cable and put it on the positive end of the donor battery.

“The get the other end of the positive cable and stick it on the positive cable of the car that’s dead.”

The following step is to take the remaining negative cable and connect to the negative battery terminal of the donor car.

He recommends to use thick cooper jump leads as those made of aluminium can melt after being used.

He adds: “Then take the other negative terminal of the jumper cable and stick it on a nice solid metal part of the car.”

But the cars expert urges drivers to never connect the cables to the negative terminal of the battery for safety reasons.

Scotty added: “Sometimes you can get a little spark and if there’s any hydrogen gas it can actually cause an explosion.

“It’s rare, but it can happen.”

Once the cables are properly connected to the respective ports, drivers can start up the engine.

However, if your battery is completely flat and it doesn’t start up straight away.

The motorist recommends to let it run for five to ten minutes to help charge up the dead battery.

To avoid running the alternators and burn the electric system, drivers should shut off the donor car before jumpstarting the vehicle.

He also warned against connecting the cables on the wrong battery terminals – as it can destroy the computer system and cost you a hefty repair bill.

Instead, car owners can buy little booster kits to carry everywhere in case they get stuck with a dead battery.

He said: “They often work fine and they’re set up so you can’t hook them up backwards because them up backwards”

If you do, the portable device will flash a red warning light before you even push the button to turn it on.

The video has now gone viral with thousands of likes and views from fellow drivers.

People rushed to the comments section to share their experience with the hack.

One user said: “I had to jump start my friends dead battery i did exactly what you said and it was a success.”

It comes as other professional mechanics revealed the main symptoms of a failing car battery.

Experts at AA have lifted the lid on the sure signs that your motor is in dire need of repair.
