According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, grey is the most popular colour for a new car and colour psychologist Suzy Chiazzari says that the colour is picked by people who are practical and pragmatic.
She said: “Drivers of grey cars are more cautious and don’t necessarily want to stand out from the crowd.
“In fact, grey vehicles do the job just right, as they are practical and reliable in all weather conditions.
“They’re able to hide muddy stains well and prioritise functionality over showiness.
“In short, if you’re the proud owner of a grey model, you’re sober, rational, and pragmatic.”
When it comes to used cars though, online car retailer Cinch says most buyers search for black cars, which it says is timeless and simple.
Another popular car colour is white, which Suzy says is best known for its purity, which suggests the owners of white vehicles are organised and forward-thinking.
White was the third most popular colour for new cars in 2022 with 268,886 models sold.
However the colour seems to be declining in popularity, with sales down by 4.8 per cent in 12 months.
Another big seller is the colour red, which Suzy notes the drivers of these cars are usually more assured that drivers of black, grey or white cars but they still like to stay safe.
Suzy said: “If you own a red vehicle, you’re bound to have quick reactions. You’re a confident motorist who isn’t afraid of being in everyone’s line of vision.
“You are dynamic, you thrive on adventures and strong emotion, and you have a rebellious spirit. That said, you understand the importance of being safe at the wheel.”
According to Cinch, owners of yellow and orange cars tend to be extroverts who like driving and seeing new places when out on the roads.
While green cars are sometimes seen as a symbol of bad luck, Suzy says the people who drive them are often fuss-free.
She said: “Someone who’s in control of a green vehicle is a trustworthy, well-balanced individual who knows exactly what they want in life.”
