I’m a famous mechanic – you’re wasting £50 buying ‘pointless’ accessory for your car… it’s a complete rip off

A WELL-known mechanic has claimed drivers are wasting their money buying a needless accessory for their vehicles.

Scotty Kilmer, who has been fixing cars for decades, said that putting additives into your fuel was just a “rip off”.

Halfords currently sells a range of fuel additives and cleaners that can cost just under £50.

But the respected mechanic said there was no need to add anything.

He told The Sun Online: “That’s something that people get suckered into.

“You don’t need to put additives in just about anything these days.

“The engine oils are much better, here in the States at least the oil is regulated by the government and has to contain a certain amount of additives with a certain volatility so it doesn’t burn or wear out the timing chain or bearings.

“As long as you do your oil changes regularly and take car of the vehicle, you don’t need additives in cars these days.”

Scotty added: “It’s kind of a misnomer, people get ripped off with that stuff.

“If you buy some pile of c**p used car maybe you have to flush the crud out of the engine but if you take care of it and change the oil regularly you don’t need any of these things. Most of them are scams anyway.”

Scotty has worked on motors for 55 years and his trusty opinion is reflected by the 5.9million subscribers he’s amassed on YouTube.

Previously, he has shared a tip that could save car hunters thousands of pounds.

In a recent post, he revealed the worst car rip-off he has ever seen.

Meanwhile, Scotty has also named the three cars he says that will cost you the most in repair bills.

In August, he revealed why he would never buy an electric car, saying the benefits are a myth.

He has also busted another myth and explained why turning your air conditioning off won’t save you money on fuel.
