While it may be satisfying to try the newest DIY formulas, or pop the build-up of dirt yourself, this expert suggests resisting the temptation.

HARSH EXFOLIATION

Although it is healthy to buff away the dead skin cells, Dr Rashmi warns excessive scrubbing can cause more irritation.

The type of exfoliator is also important and this dermatologist advised using a gentle formula.

If you opt for a harsher product, you can end up stripping away your skin’s natural oils, which leads to excess sebum – an oily substance that can clog pores.

PORE STRIPS

Any type of adhesive product which claims to strip away blackheads may be appealing – but they could be damaging.

Despite looking like a quick fix, they won’t fully clear the pores meaning any results will be short-lasting.

They are especially risky for any users with sensitive skin and can end up creating more skin dilemas.

PORE VACUUMING

There is a wide variety of suction tools on the market targeted towards those struggling with blackheads.

But, Dr Rashmi warned it is important to understand your skin type before using one as they’re bad for anyone with delicate skin.

They can even lead to the appearance of broken blood vessels around your nose if you use one too aggressively.

BLACKHEAD POPPING

Using your own hands to tackle pesky blackheads can often be the quickest and cheapest alternative.

However, manual extraction often creates more inflammation and risks pushing the dirt even further into the pore.

It frequently leads to a worse breakout, according to the dermatologist.

HOME FORMULAS

Plenty of DIY ‘hacks’ go viral claiming to clear your skin with a couple of simple ingredients.

To Dr Rashmi’s horror, products such as baking soda and toothpaste are commonly suggested as exfoliants.

One fanatic, who claimed to be 47, said that instead of relying on Botox, she used a facial cleansing oil mixed with baking soda.

But Ada Ooi, celebrity facialist and founder of 001 Skincare, explained: ”Baking soda as an exfoliator will not work as it will dry out the skin too much, there are well formulated exfoliating products where even if they have baking soda in, it’s formulated with other hydrants to keep the skin’s pH and moisture barrier healthy.”

Not only are there people on TikTok claiming that applying toothpaste on face will give a brighter complexion but that its formula will also dry out pimples and help with acne.

But, according to the skincare whizzes, you shouldn’t rush to the nearby drugstore to stock up on piles of toothpaste just yet.

”Toothpaste for face whitening is not recommended,” said Corinna Tolan, owner of Monica TolanThe Skin Experts London.

She explained that applying toothpaste ”will most likely compromise the skin barrier and incur irritation, dermatitis and inflammation”.

BEST ADVICE

Dr Rashmi concluded the best way to keep on top of blackheads is a regular and suitable skincare routine for your skin type.

He said: “Use a water-based cleanser to thoroughly cleanse the pores of your skin and boost your anti-blackhead arsenal with hero ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C.”

This comes as other experts share their top tips for maintaining healthy and glowing skin.

Including Nicola Jones, founder of skincare brand Face Junkie, knows a thing or two about looking after your face.

She suggested keeping hydrated, incorporating hyaluronic acid into your diet, getting enough sleep, minimising sun exposure and regularly washing your face.

Celebrity Skin Talk host, Scott McGlynn, argues less is more when it comes to skincare.

He also advised introducing a new product into your routine slowly, and infrequently.

Michelle Silva, 47, is a former model who is a skincare obsessive took to TikTok to share one of her many tricks and tips.

The beauty fan explained that although perfume might smell amazing you should never spray it on your neck as it can cause premature ageing and wrinkles.
