When it comes to travelling some people don’t like to spend time washing their clothes while on holiday.
For that, many holidaymakers use laundry bags to store their washing.
But your clothes could be damaged and end up with a stinky suitcase if you don’t use the right material.
Scientist and cleaning specialist from Clorox Mary Gagliardi is urging people to avoid mesh bags at all costs and has revealed the right way too pack your laundry.
The expert said dirty clothes should be separated from clean ones to avoid ruining your holiday outfits.
She explained: “Dirty laundry needs to be isolated from both clean clothes and your suitcase or duffel bag to prevent the transfer of odours or stain materials.”
Ms Gagliardi, also known as Dr Laundry, said mesh is the worst type of fabric when it comes to storing your clothes.
Mesh made from nylon or polyester doesn’t stop smells from transferring and allows the stink to spread across your suitcase.
“These bags are not good travel laundry bags because the mesh fabric allows odours to move freely through the fabric and won’t prevent odour from escaping the bag,” she added.
However, she said that those with an extra layer of mesh are okay to use especially when dealing with sweaty clothes.
Instead, travellers are advised to use other types of fabric like cotton to stop the odour from escaping.
If you want to pack wet clothes, Ms Gagliardi recommends to use synthetic bags – as they are best at containing moisture.
However, bags made of tightly woven fabric are “ideal” for keeping your washing intact until landing.
The reinforced material can keep your clothes protected – even after hours of flying.
When it comes to choosing the perfect laundry bag, travellers should be on the lookout for machine-washable ones with enough space.
Mary Gagliardi said: “Bigger is better. You don’t have to fill it all the way up. It’s still the same amount of clothing going into the suitcase.
“You just don’t want to run out of space, so make sure your dirty laundry bag can handle nearly everything you have packed if you won’t be doing any laundry while travelling.”
