I’m a Christmas foodie – people think I’m bonkers for eating trifle sandwiches, but I think they’re delicious

WHAT’S your favourite Christmas food?

Chances are, most Brits will be tucking into turkey dinners and cheese boards, mince pies, Christmas puddings and box upon box of chocolates.

But in some households, much weirder Christmas meals are being put on plates.

Mixing sweet and savoury food is almost always a bad idea – unless of course it’s popcorn. But one wacky mum has pushed the boundaries with her dessert sandwich.

47-year-old Heidi Phillips from South Wales discovered trifle sandwiches back in 2013 at a church Christmas buffet, and they’ve been a regular snack ever since.

Here, she reveals how a hilarious experiment turned into a life-long love affair with a very weird dish.

“I love a buffet – it’s an opportunity to eat as much as you can, isn’t it?

I remember the 2013 buffet well. We’d had the main course with all of the meat and savoury items, and they started bringing out all the plates of dessert.

I didn’t want to miss my chance to eat more, but I had a bread roll left. I didn’t want to waste it, so I thought ‘what could I mix it with on the dessert table?’

I spotted a big bowl of trifle and decided to plop a few spoonfuls in my buttered roll and give it a try.

You might wonder what a trifle sandwich tastes like. Well, both elements have a similar texture. You know, a bread roll is soft, but trifle is softer. It’s just like a big lump of mush really, but it works.

Everyone watched as I took big bites from my sandwich. They found it hysterical and these days they don’t expect anything less.

Most people would try a trifle sandwich once and say ‘never again’ – but not me.

I make them all the time now. My friends and family just expect me to produce a roll and some trifle and tuck in. They don’t even care anymore.

Over the last ten years I must’ve eaten at least 50 trifle sandwiches. I actually ate a big one the other day.

To make the best trifle sandwich, don’t buy the mini desserts. Get a big one and use a ladle to scoop it up and dollop onto your buttered bread – I use Utterly Butterly.

Any bread will do, but try and avoid a pre-sliced loaf – that can disintegrate and get very messy.

I never experimented with food before my first trifle sandwich, but now I do it all the time. The other day I made a beef stew and put squirty cream on top. It tasted how you’d expect, but it wasn’t bad.

I did once make something that really didn’t work. It was a rich tea biscuit topped with tomato sauce, mayonnaise and squirty cream. It was horrible.

Life is so tough, it was even before the cost of living crisis. I think it’s so nice to have a laugh.

I’ve tried hard to convert people and make them taste my trifle sandwich, but unfortunately I’ve had no luck.

One day I’ll find a like-minded trifle sandwich lover. Who knows, it might become a Christmas tradition.
