A BUILDER has shared his tips on how to spot signs of damp at your house and fix the problem without spending thousands on repairs.
YouTuber John Sale from Stoke-on-Trent has revealed the best ways to identify the problem at your house and how to solve it.
John has shown some the signs of damp in the flat
He explained that the outside flooring is also faulty
John, who works at the HYPE Building, has shared a video on the company’s channel showing viewers a property with damp issues as black mould can be seen on the walls.
The first thing he notes is early signs your home might have a problem with damp or condensation are peeling wallpaper or black mould.
Heading to the kitchen John continues: “Number two, coming to the kitchen, what we have is apparently when it’s raining really really heavily, the floor gets wet.”
After going outside to investigate further, John explains that the problem is caused by some tiles that damaged the guttering.
“The slip tiles have come down, hit the guttering and the guttering is sitting like this instead of sitting flat,” he says.
This means that water is running down to where it shouldn’t.
In that particular flat, when it rained the water would run down into a render which is “like a sponge”.
And finally, the property had another problem; the guttering was running just over the extension causing all the water to run on the kitchen’s roof.
John thinks water from both roofs runs onto the floor outside and enters the home through gaps in the flooring.
“Sand and cement between the brickwork beneath the ground level is all perished away, and that’s how water is entering the property,” he explained.
His solution includes fixing the drainage pipe as well as installing another pipe vertically down the side.
Another thing would be to replace the slabs on the outside with concrete to make a “wet room outside”.
John said that this would “save a lot of damage”, essentially costing the residents less in repairs.
