I’m a baker at Morrisons who turned £2.50 into £29,000 but my girlfriend’s the one laughing after I made costly promise

A BAKER was celebrating dough of a different kind after turning £2.50 into £29,000.

But now he’s counting the cost of his big horse racing winner – after a ‘costly’ promise he made to his girlfriend.

A lucky baker from Warrington is £29,000 better off after landing the Tote PlacepotPA

Steven Orford, 53, borrowed a fiver from his other half to place a bet while they were out Christmas shopping.

He staked just £2.50 on the Tote Placepot – where you need horses to finish in the top three in six races – and watched in amazement as they all came in at Newcastle on December 8.

Spirit Of Ash was a 9-1 runner-up in the opening 1m4½f Flat race on the all-weather.

Star Shield was a 9-2 winner in the next before Ribble Rouser followed up at 5-1 and Kalganov gave him an awesome 9-1 winner for three in a row.

Leap Day came third at 33s meaning 17-2 Ice Shadow just needed to come in the top three in the 5.45pm contest to scoop the jackpot.

The horse led going easily two furlongs from home in the mile race and stayed on well to finish runner-up.

Orford, who works at a Morrisons in Warrington, won £29,081 all in all.

But he says an agreement with his missus means he can wave goodbye to a fair chunk of it.

Delighted Orford, who placed the Tote Placepot bet in Betfred, told the Warrington Guardian: “It only took me ten minutes or so to make my selections because my girlfriend Sharon was waiting in the car outside the shop as we’d been Christmas shopping.

“In fact, I borrowed a fiver off her to get the bet on.

“And now it’s cost me because I’ve decided to give her £10,000 of the £29,081 that I won.

“I told her to treat herself before we decide what to do properly with the money.

“I’ve got myself a new jacket, hat and trainers already. I’m going to get myself a new car, but in a couple of years or so.

“I watched all the races at Newcastle and at first thought I may have won a few hundred pounds, but not as much as £29,000.

“It’s the biggest win I’ve ever had and I feel great and ready for a smashing Christmas.”

Betfred boss Fred Done said: “A baker in the dough – you couldn’t make it up!”
