Iconic car brand confirms long-awaited return with new models hoping to return it to its heyday

The Italian motors maker has confirmed an upcoming revitalisation, although there’s sadly no mention of a return to the UK.

Lancia, one of the most famous car manufacturers from Italy, has opened up on its vision for the future.

The 116-year old company was once considered one of the world’s most exciting car companies, having become a cultural icon largely thanks to its standing in the World Rally Championship.

Indeed, the brand still holds the record for the most constructors titles in the WRC with 10 overall.

The brand aiming is now aiming for a high design philosophy that will hopefully mirror its heyday with three new models.

The first of these will be an all-new Ypsilon that features both hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

The current Ypsilon, which is Lancia’s answer to the supermini, has been on sale in Europe for over 12 years and continues to sell incredibly well in its native Italy.

This updated model will be launched in 2024 and will take inspiration from the Lancia Pu+Ra HPE Concept.

Following this will be the launch of the Lancia Gamma, an EV that will hope to rival the Audi A5 Sportback.

It will feature the brand’s latest battery technology that should boast up to 435 miles from a charge and will hope to represent the pinnacle of the brand’s performance capabilities.

Perhaps the most exciting news for motors fans will be the all-electric reboot of the famous Delta model in 2028.

Few details have been confirmed about this iconic line, but it’s expected to channel the brand’s long and illustrious heritage of high performance models like the Delta Integrale, Delta S4 and 037.

Stellantis, which designs, manufactures and sells cars from 16 different brands including Lancia, have aiming for 50 per cent of Lancia’s sales to come from outside of its Italian market.

However, the firm has yet to offer a firm commitment to returning to the UK – citing limited sales potential and requirement for right-hand-drive re-engineering for UK cars.

This news comes after a major motorbike brand looks set to discontinue one of its iconic models after 20 years.

Meanwhile, two vintage sports cars abandoned in an old barn – including a Lamborghini Countach – have been discovered by one very lucky motors fan.
