‘I was an accomplice’: Kate Ritchie’s on-air confession about trip with Isla Fisher

Aussie sweetheart Kate Ritchie has confessed to a crime live on air.

“I was an accomplice,” Ritchie, 45, admitted this morning on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie.

“I was an accomplice to the crime.”

Reflecting on her time co-starring with Isla Fisher on hit series Home and Away, Ritchie recalled the pair took a holiday that went south.

”On this one weekend, Isla and I decided to go away to the Blue Mountains,” she recalled, “and I just thought I was so grown up.”

The move came as the star was just adjusting to being 18, and the idea of a trip with her co-star was ‘exciting’… until arrival that is.

Noting that the hotel has since had ‘an enormous facelift’ – this story taking place over 20 years ago – Ritchie explained the pair had planned to go to the Blue Mountains and booked into the Hydro Majestic at Medlow Bath.

“You know what the Blue Mountains are like, as you said, with a beautiful view… when you’re arriving in the day,” she said.

“When you’re arriving at night there’s actually nothing to see it’s foggy. It’s somewhat scary.”

After struggling to check in to a near-empty hotel, the duo immediately realised they did not want to stay there.

“The whole thing looked like a rundown Chinese restaurant full of, like, you know, ghosts,” Ritchie recalls.

“We walk into the Hydro Majestic. There’s no one there. Like, it’s like a movie where you go to the front desk and you ring the bell. And the still no one coming to the desk. So we ring the bell again.”

Their room, located conveniently down a dark hallway, left the pair feeling desperate to escape the hotel without paying.

While composing a plan to leave swiftly, Ritchie and Fisher decided to use their acting skills.

“Obviously, we’re both brilliant actresses,” Ritchie quipped.

“I mean, there was an argument over who was going to fake the asthma attack. [Isla] won the paper, scissors, rock, and so I have to carry her into the foyer and say, ‘I’m so sorry, my friend’s having an asthma attack, she’s doing [loud breathing], the room must be dusty’.”

After putting on the performance of a lifetime, the two made a quick exit, opting to instead spend their evening at the Fairmont Resort down the road, which was ‘more lit up’, Ritchie said.
