I tried McDonald’s new spicy menu items – my favourite scored 5/5 but there was a big let down

MCDONALD’S fans can feast on eight new items on the menu from today – so we had to try them.

The fast food giant tends to shake up its menu every few weeks.

The Big Tasty has a new spicy version and I couldn’t wait to try it

The much asked for garlic mayo has finally landed on UK menus

Items are often swapped for brand new ones, but McDonald’s can also bring back familiar faves – and it’s usually a win for fans.

From today, there are eight new additions to the menu across all of Maccies’ 1,450 restaurants in the UK.

The new items added for the very first time are a Big Tasty Spicy, a garlic mayo dip and a mega hot sauce dip – so I put them to the test.

When scoring, I considered taste, appearance and value for money.

Mega hot sauce dip – 5/5

The Mega Hot Sauce was my favourite of them all

I was so impressed with this sauce.

I wasn’t expecting much of a kick, as McDonald’s tends not to crazy with the flavour even when it does say spicy.

The texture was much like a salsa dip and wasn’t too runny.

It had the right blend of tomato sauce and spice and reminded me of the sauce that came on the Chicken Legend with hot and spicy mayo.

This was discontinued last year and if like me you miss it, this dip is a great alternative.

This is definitely a great option for those who like to get creative with their McNuggets and want something to dip them into that has a bit of pazazz.

Sadly the sauce is only available for a limited time and I’m a bit gutted that this won’t be a permanent addition.

The dips are free when you make a food purchase.

Garlic mayo – 4/5

The garlic mayo was another favourite

It’s a surprise that Maccies have never done garlic mayo in the UK before considering it’s a far from uncommon condiment with many takeaways.

Probably the most anticipated of the three that I was eager to try, the garlic mayo didn’t disappoint either.

I love garlic and you could definitely taste it.

It had a great creamy texture and was easily scooped up by my nugget.

I find that garlic dips can almost taste quite fake but this had a really authentic garlic flavour.

This is another great option to dip your fries or nuggets into – though you may need some chewing gum for after.

The dips are free when you make a food purchase.

Big Tasty Spicy 2/5

Sadly the Big Tasty Spicy let me down

The newest burger to Maccies’ menu, it joins the returning Big Tasty and Big Tasty with Bacon.

The spicy version comes with a 100% beef patty, Emmental cheese, lettuce, bacon, tomato and the classic Big Tasty sauce with a jalapeno kick.

I really wasn’t impressed with this one sadly – it really let me down.

Like with the Chicken Legend with Salsa or the McSpicy, I was expecting a kick and I just didn’t get one.

The sauce did taste really nice, but I didn’t get the jalapeno hit as promised – it just felt like a normal Big Tasty.

A Big Tasty Spicy will cost you £6.29 on its own, or £7.79 for an extra value meal, though prices can vary depending on your location.

Bear in mind that all three items will be on the menu for a limited time only – the dips will only be around while stocks last.

What else is back on the McDonald’s menu?

Cheese fans will be delighted to know that the much loved halloumi fries are back on the list too.

You can get a pack of four cheese sticks coated in a light batter, served with a rich tomato dip.

These have returned for the second year in a row.

And now that the weather is finally getting warmer, shoppers might want to pick up either a Wispa McFlurry or a Wispa Gold McFlurry.

But saying hello means we must also say goodbye and sadly, McDonald’s has axed several items.

The menu shake-up comes as we wave goodbye to the Chicken Big Mac which is being axed from today.

Fans will also no longer be able to get their hands on the mozzarella dippers or the steakhouse stack.

How can I save on my McDonald’s order?

There are plenty of ways you can save on your next trip to McDonald’s.

But always keep in mind menu prices can vary across different restaurants – so perhaps check prices online first to avoid getting a surprise.

You can get freebies on your birthday if you’ve got the My McDonald’s app – it’s free to download and you’ll only need a few quick details to get set up.

Remember to log your date of birth on the app though, otherwise you’ll miss out.

You can get a Big Mac and fries for just £1.99 as well if you fill out the quick feedback survey following your last visit.

All you’ll need is your receipt which should have been issued no more than 60 days after your visit.

How do I find my nearest McDonald’s?

If you’re planning on taking a trip to McDonald’s, you’ll want to know where your nearest branch is.

The chain has a restaurant locator tool on its website you can use to find your nearest one – and check what time it opens.

Bear in mind that McDonald’s serves breakfast every day until 11am.

After that, the menu switches to the normal menu serving meals such as burgers, chicken nuggets and more.
