I stopped to do something nice for my wife and made a small tribute to my son – then walked away with $1million

A MAN who stopped to do something nice for his wife and make a small tribute to his son walked off with $1million in lottery prize money.

Christian Kalil, from North Andover, won the big prize in the “$1,000,000 Winning 7” instant ticket game, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Kalil was on his way to the men’s league hockey game when he stopped to fill up with gas so his wife wouldn’t have to the following morning, lottery officials said.

While he was at the gas station he bought a bottle of water and the lottery ticket.

Lottery officials said on the website: “He chose the ticket because it was in dispenser number five and his son was born in the month of May.”

The store will receive a $10,000 (£8,300) bonus for selling the ticket.

Kalil chose the annuity option and will receive 20 annual payments of $50,000 (£41,500) before taxes.

On the same day Kalil won his prize, Helen Cicoria, from Buzzards Bay, became the first $10m (£8.3m) prize winner in the lottery’s instant ticket game.

She told the commission she plans on putting some of the money towards home improvements and travel.

The commission said Cicoria purchased her winning ticket from the Speedy Mart store at 2238 Cranberry Highway in West Wareham.

Over in China, a lottery winner who wanted to remain anonymous turned up to collect his prize money wearing a cartoon-like costume which covered his entire body.

The man won a huge $29.9m (£24.8m) and posed for photos wearing the costume at the lottery office in Nanning, in the southern region of Guangxi.

Using the alias Li, the man said he was concealing his identity from his family to keep them busy and hardworking.

“I have not told my wife or kid. I am concerned that they might feel superior to other people and will not work or study hard in the future,” Li said.
