I live in Cornwall – here are the six worst things you can do as a tourist this summer

A CORNISH resident has revealed the five worst things holidaymakers can do when visiting the county this summer.

When Brits go on holidays abroad, some have been known to make faux pas in front of unsuspecting locals.

But tourist mistakes don’t just occur in places like Spain or Italy, they can happen in the UK too.

In an article in the Guardian, writer and Cornish local Natasha Carthew, revealed the five worst things tourists can do on their summer holiday in the county.

Being rude

The first mistake is being rude to the locals.

She clarified: “If you’ve been asked to not drink from a glass bottle on the beach, there is a reason for that.”

Instead of ignoring advice from locals, it’s important to remain polite when receiving any advice because it’s often helpful.

Skipping on tips

Shirking on tips is another common mistake that visitors make.

Natasha added: “Don’t forget to tip the waiting staff. They are probably on minimum wage, and tipping is an easy way to support the local economy.”

Parking

While it can be difficult to find parking in some Cornish spots, she reminded visitors that they can’t leave their cars anywhere.

Natasha explained that some visitors have been known to park their cars on the beach, which is generally a big no-no.

Coastal paths

It’s also important to avoid running or cycling along Cornwall’s popular coastal paths.

She added: “It speeds up erosion and is also incredibly dangerous.”

Leaving rubbish

Because many of the beaches in Cornwall are secluded, they don’t often have bins.

The Cornish local warned holidaymakers from leaving their rubbish like disposable barbecues and plastic on the beach.

Instead, she recommended taking any rubbish away from the beach so it doesn’t end up harming the local wildlife.

Booking accommodation

Natasha also encouraged tourists to book their stays in caravans, holiday parks, or hotels.

She added: “And don’t do a mass Airbnb booking: there’s a housing crisis in Cornwall, and the unregulated accommodation option is putting pressure on housing and pricing local people out of the market.”

And Cornwall isn’t the only place in the UK where tourists are likely to make mistakes.

London is one of the most popular cities in the world for tourists, but a lot of them make big mistakes whenever they visit.

Going to the wrong restaurants, getting caught in tourist traps, or just not doing your research can limit visitors’ enjoyment of the English capital, and can also cost a lot too.

And this tourist went viral after writing a review of his UK break with Tesco among his favourite places to visit.
