I Hated Base Makeup Until I Tried Laura Mercier’s New Foundation

Laura Mercier recently launched the Real Flawless Weightless Perfecting Foundation.
The medium-coverage foundation comes in 30 shades and promises to be suitable for all skin types.
It feels lightweight on the skin, making it great for anyone who dislikes heavy base makeup.

If you had told me four months ago that I’d be wearing foundation every day for the last few months, I would have laughed. I’ve always hated base makeup and had trouble finding products that didn’t leave my skin feeling tight, dry, and downright funky after application. There are a few items I’ve found that I’m happy to wear for special occasions, but nothing that I was ready to commit to daily.

I went through a pretty tough breakup last year, and after moving cities and starting all over, I was determined to put myself out there and start going on dates. Unfortunately, dates require me to do a full face of makeup and hair, which meant that I needed to find a foundation I was happy to wear on the regular and fast. I have dry, sensitive skin, so I needed something that would make my complexion radiant, hydrated, and most importantly, not look cakey. After a lot of trial and error, I finally found a winner: the Laura Mercier Real Flawless Weightless Perfecting Foundation ($49).

What I Like About the Laura Mercier Real Flawless Weightless Perfecting Foundation

Because I’ve never been a huge fan of foundation, it takes a lot for me to actually love a base-makeup product. What initially sold me was how easily the product blended into my skin and how flawless it looked. But the reason I keep coming back to it: it genuinely feels like I don’t have anything on. Unlike other products, I truly forget I’m wearing foundation with this product. Also, I like that this formula is lightweight but still offers a good amount of coverage for when I need it – I can choose exactly how I want it to look by controlling how much I use. The consistency makes it perfect for both my no-makeup makeup days, as well as the nights when I need a full face of glam.

Plus, it doesn’t cling to dry patches or flake off, and it plays nicely with the rest of my skin-care products (pilling is a huge pet peeve of mine). I also have acne-prone skin, and this product didn’t make me break out, which is a big feat.

Lastly, this foundation is long-lasting. If I prime and set it, it lasts all day and even through an entire date that may (or may not) consist of making out.

How to Use the Laura Mercier Real Flawless Weightless Perfecting Foundation

The brand recommends applying the foundation using the “flawless face technique,” which consists of four key steps. Start by priming your skin, then go in with the foundation. From there, use concealer to cover up any discoloration, and lastly, finish with a setting powder to prolong your makeup.

Personally, I like using the flawless face technique when I need to make sure my makeup will last for hours, or if I’m going to an event or on a date. If I’m going to be running errands during the day or hanging out with friends, I prefer to use Mary Phillips’s contour trick, which gives me lighter coverage. After finishing my skin-care routine, I apply concealer. From there, I use a foundation brush or a large, fluffy powder brush to apply a quarter-size amount of foundation to my entire face and down my neck. I then set everything using the Laura Mercier Ultra-Blur Translucent Loose Setting Powder ($48) and finish with a setting spray.

What to Consider Before Trying the Laura Mercier Real Flawless Weightless Perfecting Foundation

One thing to note about the Laura Mercier Real Flawless Weightless Perfecting Foundation is that a little bit of product goes a long way. The first time I tested it out, I squirted three or four dollops directly onto my face, and it ended up being way too much. I’ve learned that a quarter-size amount is enough to cover my entire face and most of my neck. Because this foundation is buildable, I prefer to start with a smaller amount then add more later if I feel like I need additional coverage.
