I drove the ‘Polo ID2’ – designed by Andreas Mindt & priced at 22K, it’s the first electric Volkswagen for everyone

THE German word “volks” translates as people and “wagen” is car. So Volkswagen literally means “people’s car”.

Here’s the first electric Volkswagen truly for everyone.

It’s a Polo-sized EV costing “less than £22k” and it will be followed a smaller, cheaper Up!-sized city car.

This battery-powered “Polo”, officially called ID2, will do 280 miles, recharge to 80 per cent in 20 minutes, and has a 226hp e-motor driving the front wheels. Nippy, then. Top speed is 99mph.

It looks much like a regular Polo on the outside but with a clever Tardis-like cabin and a 440-litre boot (bigger than a Golf).

The car was designed in six weeks by Andreas Mindt after rejoining the VW mothership from Bentley.

Polo Mindt?

We think he’s done a good job.

The front passenger seat folds flat for a load length of 2.2 metres.

There’s extra storage under the pop-up rear bench for the charging cable – or to hide valuables.

You’ll also find magnetic smartphone holders with inductive charging up front and in the backrests of the front seats. Clever.

There are electric massaging front seats, glass roof, a 230v socket.

Best of all, big clear display screens with simple controls for volume and air con. Unlike an ID3.

ID2 hits the road in 2025, followed by a compact SUV in 2026. Think Polo and T-Cross.

Bosses confirmed Mindt is also working on an electric car “for less than £17,500”. That’ll be the Up!-sized ID1.

We’re getting there, aren’t we?
