Hurricane Tammy is continuing to push north over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean after slamming the northeastern Caribbean islands with hurricane-force winds and heavy rain last weekend.
The hurricane is expected to continue on its northward journey for the next day or so before it begins to lose some steam and makes a turn to the northwest that could eventually bring tropical storm conditions to Bermuda this weekend.
2023 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON GUIDE: HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THIS YEAR’S STORMS
As of the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Tammy is located about 600 miles to the south-southeast of Bermuda and has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, making it a Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
The NHC says Tammy could see some slight strengthening over the next day or so before it begins to weaken and becomes a post-tropical cyclone on Thursday.
WHEN IS THE TYPICAL LAST HURRICANE STRIKE ON THE US COAST?
The latest NHC advisory has Hurricane Tammy moving to the northeast at about 9 mph.
It’s expected to continue on that track through Wednesday and then begin a turn to the north at a slower speed on Thursday.
The official track for Hurricane Tammy has the storm moving toward Bermuda, which could be threatened by tropical storm conditions this weekend.
Even though Tammy is pulling away from the Caribbean islands, the storm is still expected to produce large waves that will impact portions of the Leeward Islands, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico over the next few days.
Those swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.
WHERE ARE THE LESSER ANTILLES, LEEWARD ISLANDS AND WINDWARD ISLANDS?
Hurricane Tammy made landfall on the island of Barbuda around 10:15 p.m. EDT Saturday with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph.
The region saw gusty winds, angry seas and tremendous rain as the heart of the storm moved by just miles to the east of many of those islands.
High winds continued into early Sunday morning before the late-season hurricane headed northwestward away from the islands.
