A HUGE supermarket chain is opening new stores alongside a bargain brand.

Iceland has teamed up with Costcutter to open its first “Iceland Local”.

Iceland Local is a new concept launched to offer shoppers a convenience-style version of the frozen brand.

The supermarket giant and Costcutter opened the first store on March 31 at a Texaco garage in Wolverhampton.

Customers can purchase various items as well as pay for petrol at the till.

The majority of the products will be supplied by Costcutter but there will also be a large chunk of frozen items from Iceland.

But the supermarket said it has plans to open more local stores in the “months ahead”.

We have asked how many and where but Iceland wouldn’t provide any more information for now.

Justin Addison, international & wholesale director at Iceland Foods said: “Iceland Local will make our unique range of frozen, chilled, fresh and grocery products available to customers in a completely new type of location, complementing our 1,000 company-owned Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores on the nation’s high streets and retail parks.

“Iceland Local gives customers an exciting new opportunity to pick up our food while they are refuelling, and we have already have plans to roll out the concept with further openings in the months ahead.”

It comes after the frozen supermarket announced it would be shutting some stores this year.

Iceland has released a list of locations shutting this year, but it’s not clear whether staff are at risk of redundancy.

Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse the chain has over 1,000 UK stores.

The closures will follow a previous two stores which shut in the last few weeks.

Four Iceland stores are due to shut shop this year so far.

The list is below:

White Rose Centre, Rhyl – March 14South Street, Newport, Isle of Wight – March 25St Catherine’s Place, Bedminster, Bristol – March 25Deiniol Centre, Bangor – March 27

Iceland isn’t the only retailer to open (and close) stores recently.

Bargain shop B&M will be cutting the ribbon on six stores in coming weeks after closing several this year.

The discounter has revealed to The Sun that it will be opening three brand new shops in May, as well as relaunching three more following expansions.

It comes following the closure and relocation of four stores last month.

How can I save at Iceland?

There are plenty of deals and loyalty offers not to be missed at Iceland.

For example, there’s the Bonus Card Loyalty Scheme – it grants access to exclusive offers and lets you plan a budget by saving up cash in your account.

Launched in 2021, it’s free to sign up for online and you’ll just need to provide a few quick details.

With it, you can get the following special benefits:

£1 bonus each time you add £20 to your savings balanceExclusive Bonus Card pricesFree home delivery in stores and onlinePrizes and offers

It’s a similar thing to other loyalty schemes like Asda rewards and Tesco Clubcard.

It’s good to always shop around regardless of the offers you see though, because you never know what you’re missing elsewhere.

Use comparison tools like Trolley.co.uk to browse the price of an item from other supermarkets so you know you’re getting the best deal.
