How a forgotten former Man Utd star helped new City wonderkid Oscar Bobb on road to stardom

MANCHESTER CITY ace Oscar Bobb was given a helping hand along the road to stardom by a former Manchester United graduate.

The Norway winger, 20, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s brightest young stars and will hope for a taste of action in the derby at the Etihad.

But while in the academy at Oslo side Lyn, he was mentored by ex-Red Devil Mats Moller Daehli, 28.

The Molde midfielder was out injured in 2015, so kept busy by returning to his first club to help the next generation.

Former Lyn coach Mikal Emil Aaserud said Bobb immediately stood out to Daehli because of his talent — and also his attitude.

He said: “It was inspiring for young players such as Oscar to have Mats there as an extra coach and mentor.

“Everyone knew Mats had been at United. He played in Germany and was a Norway international.

“But he’d also gone through the ranks at Lyn, so the kids could see what was possible.”

Bobb was a 12-year-old at the time but his desire to improve caught the eye.

Aaserud added: “Mats could see Oscar was already so talented and rated him highly.

“But I also know he was impressed by his humility and willingness to learn.”

Bobb joined City from Valerenga in 2019 and signed a new Etihad deal until 2029 last month.
