Horse trainer gets one over his ex-wife as his 40-1 outsider beats her £450,000 1-4 favourite in race

AN EPSOM Derby-winning horse trainer got one over his ex-wife when his 40-1 outsider beat her £450,000 1-4 favourite in a race.

Peter Chapple-Hyam sprung the ultimate surprise on former wife Jane when his horse Sharona triumphed at Leicester on Tuesday.

Peter, who won the world’s most prestigious race with Dr Devious in 1992 and Authorized in 2007 respectively, cheered his outsider of three home in the seven furlong race worth just under £5,000 to the winner.

Jane’s two-year-old colt Primo Lara was a big-money purchase at last year’s Tattersalls sales, but made it 0-2 after fading in the closing stages.

The other horse in the race, the aptly-named 3-1 Loved By You, finished a distant third, leaving it free for the former couple to slug it out late on.

And it was two-year-old filly Sharona who came out on top under jockey Callum Hutchinson.

Punters were quick to take to Twitter wrongly accusing the couple they believed to still be married of orchestrating a mad 1-2.

But Peter replied to the erroneous comments with some withering ones of his own.

One punter wrote: “Is that an upset or is that just a fix? He was n*****g her for 16 years.”

To which Peter, 60, joked: “No mate, just married.”

Another comment read: “Incredible placing by the happily married couple to land the forecast.”

But Peter hit back: “Ha ha like it but been divorced for 18 years sorry to ruin your theory.”

The estranged couple still share a surname but that’s it after finalising their divorce in 2005.

Peter left their marital home of 18 years and ended up sleeping on the floor at a mate’s house.

He said: “I was on a blow-up mattress that I had to blow up every night because it had a puncture.”

He saw his mental health crumble as the pressures of the job took their toll.

But things have taken a turn for the better since then, with Peter enjoying a great year on the track with 14 winners and over £100,000 in prize money.
