Coral Trophy runner-by-runner guide
FRODON 3
ON the case. Won the Badger Beers Chase on his last handicap run and has been running in Graded company with little success since.
Has plenty of weight but this trip and track suit and his class could see him make the frame. Will give it a good go from the front.
SAINT CALVADOS 5
SAINT’S no sinner. Hasn’t fired this season when ridden by amateur owner David Maxwell but has Harry Cobden up today who partnered him to a Grade 2 win at Sandown in April.
He’s dropped below his last winning handicap mark and stays well. Looks the one to beat.
CLONDAW CASTLE 3
DAW may score. Been hitting the frame in hot races without looking like winning.
He’s off the same handicap mark as when taking this race two years ago and good ground is ideal. He needed his comeback at Kempton last month and no surprise to see him go close.
KILLER CLOWN 2
NO Killer. Won on last visit here in March but has largely struggled since and was hammered at Newbury latest.
Track record is a plus but he needs to raise his game.
ANNSAM 4
ANN can. Landed a nice prize in style here last month in heavy ground but likes it quicker too like when winning over hurdles at Newbury four runs ago.
This trip suits and he has more to offer with a 7lb rise looking fair.
BOBHOPEORNOHOPE 2
LITTLE Hope. Battled well to win at Ludlow last time when staying three miles strongly.
A 3lb rise for that is fair but he’ll need to improve against these stronger rivals.
ENRILO 2
ENRIL-NO thanks. Has failed to complete five of his past six starts including here last time.
Despite that he’s only trickling down the weights and is best watched.
OUR POWER 4
POWER surge. Fifth in the Ultima at last year’s Festival and was a game winner on his only start this season in good company at Ascot in October.
Was third in this 12 months ago en route to Cheltenham and has every chance of matching that from 5lb higher in the weights.
FLEGMATIK 2
FLEG may flag. Last two wins have been here but in lesser company and his jumping let him down when hammered at Sandown earlier this month.
He stays well but needs to raise his game at this level.
BLACK GERRY 1
BLACK and blue. Solid performer at lower levels over shorter distances in decent ground.
He struggled at Fontwell last time and this mark is asking a lot against stronger rivals.
JACAMAR 2
JAC the lad. Stayed well up Leicester’s hill to win over 2m4f last time but he has his sights raised plenty here.
Yard continues in good form and he’s scored here but more needed for this.
CAP DU NORD 4
CAP fits. Won this last year and arrives in good form after a seven-length win in this class at Ascot last weekend.
We know this trip and track are ideal and, while he’s off a higher mark, it still looks fair. Big chance if handling the quick turnaround.
KILLER KANE 3
KANE stings. Landed first win of the season well here last time when jumping well and enjoying the track.
Goes up in class here but stays well and will like this decent ground. One for the shortlist under a 5lb penalty.
Templegate’s Coral Trophy tip
SAINT looks heaven sent in the Coral Trophy.
SAINT CALVADOS signed off last season with an impressive 16-length win in the Grade 2 Oaksey Chase at Sandown.
That was the last time he had Harry Cobden on board and he has held his own in strong company under his dentist owner David Maxwell on both starts this season.
He will definitely benefit from the stronger handling he gets today and Mr Saturday Paul Nicholls can land another big prize.
Our Power looks a threat coming back from a break after a big win at Ascot in October.
He is a proper stayer who was a cracking third in this race 12 months ago. He’s only 5lb higher and can have another say.
Annsam scored in the mud here last month but is effective on quicker ground too and looks a major threat for canny trainer Evan Williams.
Last year’s winner Cap Du Nord scored in style at Ascot last Saturday and can figure provided this isn’t coming too soon.
