Horse racing tips: Templegate’s 9-2 NAP has looked unbeatable in handicaps for his red-hot trainer

TEMPLEGATE tackles Friday’s racing confident of building the bank for a massive Saturday of action.

WEST END BOY (3.35 Sandown, nap)

Has been in fine form since trainer Joe Tizzard started campaigning him in handicaps.

The gelding kicked off with an impressive 10-length victory at Wincanton where he relished the testing conditions. That was a race for conditional riders so he stayed on the same mark for a Plumpton success that was eyecatching for a different reason.

He was travelling nicely into the closing stages before he was hampered a couple of times. So it was a good effort to pick up strongly and end up winning going away.

Sadly the handicapper was watching but he hasn’t gone over the top with an 11lb rise in the weights.

It’s still early days so there should be a lot more to come from Brendan Powell’s mount.

STAY AWAY FAY (2.25 Sandown, nb)

Was good enough to win the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham Festival over hurdles.

Yet Paul Nicholls’ hope already looks like he has what it takes to go even further over fences. He was well backed before his first chase effort at Exeter last month where he jumped like an old hand. He was up against some decent novices and battled back after being headed crossing the third-last.

It was a cosy success in the end and he should progress plenty for the experience.

KOTMASK (1.15 Sandown, treble)

Got off the mark over fences at the second attempt last time.

He had that solid Plumpton contest in the bag a long way from home and really seemed to enjoy the holding ground.

Conditions should be the same today for Gary Moore’s improver who has very capable 3lb claimer Caoilin Quinn in the saddle.

That accounts for some of his rise in the weights and there should be a lot more to come from this five-year-old.

One to watch

HORTZADAR (3.45 Newcastle)

Made his all-weather debut at the grand old age of eight here last time out.

The David O’Meara veteran took to the surface like a duck to water.

He travelled really strongly before fighting off the challengers in the final furlong.

He has gone up 2lb for that battling win but 3lb claimer Mark Winn takes over which cancels that out. This is a similar race and he can go close again.

Templegate’s 7-2 banker treble

SANDOWN must be a bit disappointed with the total of 17 runners for their three Grade 1 contests tomorrow.

It’s a sad fact that there just aren’t enough top-class jumps horses in the UK at the moment.

With Ireland getting ready for its own big races around Christmas, there isn’t a single challenger heading across the Irish Sea to Esher today.

So it’s a good chance for British trainers to hoover up some prizemoney while Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott aren’t looking.

There will be plenty wanting to ‘buy money’ by backing the three shorties in the Grade 1s.

At current Coral prices, if Constitution Hill, Jonbon and JPR One all win the treble will add up to 7-2 — largely because JPR One is a 7-4 shot.

Compared to a treble of three football bankers, that’s not actually too bad.

Footballers don’t have fences and hurdles in the way though!
