Our first look at “True Detective: Night Country” has arrived. On Dec. 22, HBO Max released a montage of clips from its forthcoming slate of 2023 shows, which include “Succession,” “The Idol,” and “Velma.” It also includes a few clips from the fourth season of “True Detective” that hint at what we can expect from the series’ next installment.

Each season of “True Detective” follows different detectives on different cases. The first season, which aired in 2014, starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Subsequent seasons starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Mahershala Ali, and now we know that season four will be produced by Issa López and Barry Jenkins and will star none other than Jodie Foster.

This isn’t the first time Foster has played a detective digging into the darkest corners of the criminal world – she’s perhaps best known for her role as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs.” Here’s what we know about her newest case.

“True Detective: Night Country” First Look

“True Detective: Night Country” Plot

The show will take place in Ennis, AK, according to HBO Max, a town so far north that it sometimes experiences unending polar nights. In the midst of constant darkness, eight arctic researchers mysteriously vanish, and the detectives assigned to their case must “confront their pasts and the dark truths lying underneath the Arctic ice,” per the show’s tagline.

“True Detective: Night Country” Cast

Foster will star in “True Detective: Night Country” alongside Kali Reis. They’ll be the series’s first all-women detective duo. John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand have also joined the cast.

“True Detective: Night Country” Release Date

We don’t have an exact release date yet, but it looks like we can expect the show to air sometime in 2023.
