Locals on shop and school runs face constant £12.50-a-day fees after Mr Khan put all boroughs under Ulez at 12.01am.

Ms Hall said: “This is going to be a disaster for families, small businesses and charities.

“It is nothing but a tax grab which will have only a negligible effect on air quality.

“I will stop it on Day One of my Mayoralty.”

And yesterday a tribunal overturned fines against scaffolder Noel Willcox, 48, after he argued they did not make the charges clear.

Mr Khan defended his move last night saying: “I am not prepared to stand idly by when we have the ability to save lives and tackle the climate crisis.”

But Transport Secretary Mark Harper called it “the latest salvo in Labour’s war on motorists”.

FairFuel UK accused Mr Khan of punishing drivers to pursue his “misinformed green pipedream”.

The Taxpayers’ Alliance added: “Motorists elsewhere fear similar schemes in their areas.”
