HALF a million women signed up for discount HRT in a win for The Sun’s push to subsidise menopause medications.

Patients have saved £11million since April by taking up a prescription prepayment certificate to get a year’s supply for £19.30.

It removes the need to fork out the £9.65 prescription charge for hormone replacement therapy when supplies run out.

More than two million women across England use the medication to control symptoms including depression, hot flushes, insomnia, muscle and joint pain and weight gain.

It rebalances oestrogen and testosterone levels.

The Women’s Health Ambassador, Prof Dame Lesley Regan, said: “The PPC is a fantastic way of giving more women affordable HRT treatment.

“Five hundred thousand . . . is a clear, tangible result for the Women’s Health Strategy.”

BBC broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, of the Menopause Mandate Campaign, said: “This is incredibly heartening news.”

The Sun’s Fabulous Menopause Matters campaign has for years called for better access, and lower prices, for HRT.
