Grand National shake-up with two new favourites and six horses scratched from £1million race

THE Grand National has seen a right shake-up in the markets with two new favourites and six horses axed from the £1million race.

Some 81 horses remain in contention for the world’s most famous contest following the first scratchings’ deadline.

And it means defending champion Corach Rambler has been joined by two Irish raiders at the head of the market.

Last year’s hero was 12-1 with William Hill to reclaim his crown when the original line-up was revealed.

But he has now been joined at those odds by Willie Mullins’ I Am Maximus and Vanillier, Gavin Cromwell’s runner-up from last year.

They were 25-1 and 16-1 when the entries first came out a month ago.

One horse among the five scratched which may raise eyebrows is last year’s tenth Le Milos.

The Dan Skelton-trained nine-year-old could next be seen at Cheltenham Festival, where he has three entries and is a best 25-1 for the Pertemps final.

He picked up £5,000 for his finish in last year’s National but connections have kept him over hurdles this season.

Skelton has also scratched Ashtown Lad – a horse owned by Darren Yates, who famously became a millionaire after backing Frankie Dettori’s Magnificent Seven.

And the same trainer has pulled the plug on Sail Away’s potential bid.

Donald McCain, whose dad Ginger trained the famous Red Rum, has pulled Minella Trump from the list of potential runners.

While Joseph O’Brien has scratched Fakir D’Oudairies and Nicky Henderson has ruled Dusart out of running.

It means Corach Rambler, Vanillier and I Am Maximus are 12-1 co-favourites.

While Noble Yeats, Mahler Mission and Panda Boy are all 14-1 ahead of former Gold Cup hero Minella Indo at 16s.
