Full Moon calendar: When is the next one?

ATTENTION, lunar lovers – a full Moon is upon us once again.

They’re one of the night sky’s best and easiest-to-spot sights – and thankfully, we always know when they’re going to occur. Plan your stargazing accordingly.

When is the next full moon?

PAIn a year, there are up to 12 full Moons, however sometimes we’re lucky with 13[/caption]

The full Moon happens at very specific times in a lunar phase.

It means the Moon shines a lot brighter than usual – and often looks a lot bigger too.

The usual pattern is about once every 29.5 days, giving us about 12 a year – though some years a 13th is squeezed in.

Each full Moon is given a special name.

When is the best time to see a full Moon?

As with any Moon, the best time is at night, when all is dark allowing it to shine and glow.

So be prepared to set your alarm for the early hours.

You always want a day when the skies are clear of clouds, so be sure to check the weather forecast before to avoid disappointment.

What is a supermoon?

A supermoon may make a regular appearance but it’s still an impressive sight.

Technically speaking, it is a combination of two different astronomical effects and happens when a new or full Moon coincides with a perigee – the moon’s closet point to Earth in its monthly orbit.

A Moon has to come within 90 per cent of its closest approach to Earth to be formally defined as a super moon.

This is relatively rare, occurring just a few times a year.
