Nothing is scarier than your vehicle shutting down in the middle of the road.

Strange noises, dashboard warning lights and bad driving performance could be early symptoms.

Luckily, car experts at Slash Gear have listed the common root causes of your car’s failure.

A blockage in the fuel system could be one of the reasons behind an engine shutting down.

The system, which is formed of a fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel filters, and fuel injectors, can cause your engine to stop working if compromised.

The experts explained: “The fuel pump pulls gasoline or diesel from inside the tank, into the lines, through the filters, and then to the injectors serving the engine’s combustion chamber.

“If the fuel pump is bad, it cannot draw enough fuel or muster enough pressure to get the fuel to the engine.

“Without fuel, the engine will stop — even while driving.”

To avoid a mishap drivers should always clean the fuel injectors and replace the spark plugs if damaged.

Another possible cause could be an electric issue with the alternator or battery in your car.

Problems with the engine alternator are the most common among vehicles.

It is a key part of your car as it charged the battery and transforms the mechanical power into electrical energy.

But if it fails, your car’s engine could stall while driving.

For this, motors pros recommend to be on the lookout for warning signs on the dashboard.

They said: “For issues concerning the battery and alternator, most of them can be avoided with regular maintenance.

“A good mechanic will spot any issues related to this before you figure it out while driving.”

The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) is another key part of your motor – which controls the engine fuel injection and ignition.

However, a bad CKP sensor can cause your engine to break down suddenly.

Finally, drivers should always check the temperature of their vehicles as it can directly impact your engine.

If your car overheats, it can stop working without warning.

Experts added: “You should also be able to tell your car is running too hot when the thermometer on the dashboard signals that the engine is above normal temperatures.”

It comes as an expert mechanic warned garages could refuse to fix a serious engine issue – and it cost thousands even if they have a go.

David Long, known as the Car Wizard, urged drivers to keep an eye on a vital car part to avoid being slapped with huge repair bills.

Meanwhile, experts revealed ten signs your car isn’t ready for the winter and when you need to take action.
