A STUNNING Ford Capri racing car is up for auction – giving collectors a chance to own a piece of motorsport history.

Capri fans will be getting plenty of bang for their buck though, as this vintage motor, built in 1981, has a legendary backstory.

According to the listing, this fast Ford was originally built from a Ford-supplied trimmed body shell for the 1981 production saloon car championships.

Funded by Autoplan Warranties, it was put together by Roger Dowson of Gerry Marshal Racing for the iconic Willhire endurance race – which drivers Gerald Marshall and Graham Scarborough finished in second-place.

Marshal continued to race the car for the rest of the season and won every race he entered, as well as both Production Saloon Car Championships.

Over the years, the motor was raced to much success, with Scarborough winning further championships with it between 1998 and 2001.

The car is particularly well known at the much-loved Belgium Grand Prix venue at Spa, where it’s enjoyed many successful visits.

While the racer hasn’t been used since 2021, it has recently had its Graham Scarborough-built ‘Group 1’ engine refreshed, while a new clutch was fitted which transmits through to an original Hewland ‘Group 1’ close-ratio gearbox and an Atlas 3.44 ratio rear axle.

More recently, the car has been boosted by a thorough refresh with the paintwork and period livery restored to a very high standard.

Iconic Auctioneers, who confirm the Capri is complete with recently issued FIA/HTP papers making it eligible for a number of high-profile races, said: “The Autoplan Capri has always proven to be a very fast and very reliable front-running car and, in the right hands, should continue to be a winner.”

This comes as another racing Capri heads to auction next month with racing bucket seats and finished in an eye-catching Sebring Red – and it can be yours for a bargain price.

Elsewhere, Netflix fans should get a load of this Jaguar sports car used in the hit series The Crown.

The 1987 XJ-S Cabriolet is almost identical to the one Princess Diana used in real life and featured in season five of the show – and now it’s set to sell for £20,000.
