For too long, hard-working Brits have been ripped off at the petrol pump – now we’re standing up for drivers

We are a nation of drivers.

Cabbies, van drivers, commuters, parents on the school run – we need our cars every day.

But for too long hardworking people have been ripped off when filling up their motor.

We saw how some fuel bosses failed to pass on a total of £900m in savings to drivers when oil prices fell.

Enough is enough – we’re slamming the brakes on unfair petrol and diesel prices.

Just like The Sun, I am standing up for motorists.

We’re forcing petrol stations to come clean about what they are charging.

And our Pumpwatch scheme will help people find the best deals in their area at the click of a button.

This will bring competition back to the pumps and drive down prices to keep inflation down.

Under our plans, fuel retailers will be required by law to provide live price information.

This real-time data will be free for tech whizzes to use in apps, sat navs, online maps and price comparison websites.

We take this for granted when looking for a hotel, buying insurance or booking flights.

And very soon, this will transform how we shop for fuel.

Like Sun readers, I was shocked at the behaviour of some petrol station bosses during the pandemic.

That’s why I vowed to hold any rip-off retailers to account.

I’m pleased many are now being more open over their prices as part of the competition watchdog’s new voluntary scheme.

And since our recent warnings, petrol prices are now at their lowest level since early October 2021.

But it doesn’t end here. We’re also keeping costs down for families with a 5p fuel duty cut.

And I won’t be taking my foot off the gas until we’ve driven unfair prices out of our forecourts for good.
