He urged Brits to keep their motors clean and tidy, and even invest in a professional valet service when they intend to sell up.
Motorpoint’s analysis has suggested that cleaner cars are much more likely to be bought and will fetch a higher sum when the time comes.
John said: “First impressions really do count, so it’s no surprise that a dirty or messy vehicle can have an impact on its value.
“You’re best off cleaning the entire car, inside and out, before looking to sell as this could make a difference to your valuation price.
“[But] if you think you could do a good job yourself, there’s no need to pay for a professional clean as this could cost you up to £150.”
And it doesn’t just have to look nice, with smell also playing a role in the value of a car.
John warned that smokers or pet owners who often keep their furry friends in the car could see up to 10% knocked off their sale price.
Fortunately, The Sun has plenty of tips and tricks for getting your motor gleaming.
One car guru shared how a £1.25 B&Q item can make washing your motor a breeze.
And many might not know that an 80p household staple cleans up the interior better than a vacuum – and is perfect for pets.
However, one expert did share an urgent warning over a car wash mistake that could cost you hundreds.
Overall, Motorpoint estimates that a well-kept vehicle could see a boost of £1,500 compared to a dirty one.
Indeed, the firm suggests that up to 85% of drivers are willing to accept a lower price just to get the sale done.
This could, according to the experts, leave you with as much as 50% less than you could get thanks to factors like car mods, mileage and simply losing the spare keys.
It comes after another driving whizz revealed five little-know ways you could be ruining your car – including a simple keyring error.
