Firm launches radical ‘calendar purge’ and axes staff meetings in bid to cut down on timewasting

A FIRM has told staff to stop having meetings.

Shopify launched a radical “calendar purge” on employee get-togethers to cut down on timewasting.

All recurring meetings with more than two people are axed, with none at all on Wednesdays.

The Canadian firm, which powers websites for thousands of companies and brands, told staff to decline invitations and remove themselves from large chat groups.

Founder Tobias Lutke said: “If you say yes to a thing, you actually say no to every other thing you could have done with that period of time.”

Shopify has also launched a cost-cutting drive to shed 1,000 people from its workforce.

Constant meetings have become one of the biggest ­bugbears of modern working, especially since the pandemic.

Catherine Shuttleworth of consultancy firm Savvy said letting staff “do work rather than have meetings about work” will always improve efficiency.
