Scotty Kilmer, who has five decades of experience working on vehicles, shared the hack on his YouTube channel.

He said: “It’s hot, it’s humid, your car’s AC stinks.

“It works but it stinks.

“Because mould and bacteria can grow inside your dash.

“You can use a little [anti-bacterial] spray to get rid of that mould and bacteria.”

Your air con is full of vents, hoses and fans which can all host bacterial growth.

There’s a particular risk during the winter thanks to wet weather and the prospect of things like dead leaves falling into the air intake and rotting.

So spring cleaning season is the perfect time to address this.

All you need to do is locate the intake port on your bonnet – it’s usually just under the windscreen wipers.

Turn your air con on full whack and run your hand over the bottom of the windscreen to feel where the air is being sucked in.

You need to make sure the system is set to pull air in from the outside, so don’t press the windscreen heater or recirculation buttons.

Once you’ve found it, simply spray some of the anti-bac into it and let that run through the air con for a few minutes.

This will kill the bacteria growing within the system and neutralise those musty and damp smells.

However, Scotty did throw in a word of warning on how to do this safely.

He added: “[Once you’ve finished] keep the windows rolled down and let it air out.

“Either all day or overnight so you’re not breathing in all those fumes.”

Make sure your car is properly aired out and the smell of anti-bac has faded.

Fumes from the spray are not dangerous from normal usage but could restrict your breathing in very high amounts.

They could also be irritating to your airway so be extra cautious if you suffer from asthma or other breathing difficulties.
