EV drivers don’t know about ‘hidden’ setting which saves their battery in winter, car dealer reveals

A CAR dealer has warned EV drivers about winter battery issues which can be saved by a “hidden” motor setting.

The motors expert took to TikTok to share a tip to maintain your battery life in the winter.

As temperatures plummet, cars can struggle to perform with the same efficiency.

Engines can be tricky to restart during colder or rainy conditions which can lead to challenging driving.

Just like diesel or fuel cars, electric cars are less efficient and can take longer to charge up.

Luckily, pros at AutoTraderUK have shared important precautions drivers can take to prevent a motor scare.

All you need is to set the interior temperature of your car using the preconditioning feature.

The cars expert said: “If you’ve got an electric car, make sure you set the timer so you can pre-condition the battery.

“Get the seats all warm so the cars are ready to go when it’s cold.”

Experts said preconditioning can help save up battery range as you don’t have to start the engine and wait for it to warm up.

Most EVs can be remotely set using an app on your smartphone – so when you jump into your vehicle is nice and warm.

The genius hack can save drivers time in the morning as it can avoid de-icing your windscreen.

The setting will warm the battery, which allows it to run more efficiently and avoid the impact of cold weather on the engine.

If your vehicle is plugged you can still save up on range as the energy used to heat the car will not come from the battery.

You can even choose which seats to heat up depending on the amount of passengers on board.

EV owners should also be aware of their driving style during icy weather conditions.

In good weather conditions EVs are very efficient, with most newer models boasting more than 200 miles in a single trip.

However, when it’s colder or raining, it is a good idea to keep an eye on your driving style.

Harsh braking and heavy acceleration can drain the battery life unnecessarily.

Another helpful tip shared by the car experts was to activate the eco setting which will automatically reduce the heat and accelerator pedal impact.

It comes as an EV expert revealed five issues drivers must check in winter as their cars become less efficient.

Dominic Wyatt explained how cold weather can affect electric cars and how drivers can combat the problems it causes.

Dominic, from the International Drivers Association, claimed that low temperatures can mask signs of damage and urged motorists to stay alert.
