Erik ten Hag digs out two Man Utd stars in live BBC interview after scraping past Newport in FA Cup

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Erik ten Hag was critical of two players after his side beat Newport County in the FA Cup.

The Red Devils progressed to the fifth round with a thrilling 4-2 victory against their League Two opponents.

But their win at Rodney Parade was far from comfortable with the Welsh side coming from two goals down to level the tie after United missed several chances.

Alejandro Garnacho hit the bar when he could have squared it for a tap-in and Rasmus Hojlund was left fuming another time he did not pass to him.

Eventually, a 68th minute strike by Antony and a last-gasp Hojlund effort saw them avoid a huge upset.

But Ten Hag appeared frustrated with his team’s performance as he spoke to the BBC after the game.

He even singled out two players for not showing their clinical edge, saying: “The first 35 mins we were very comfortable.

“Leading 2-0 but it should have been 3-0 or 4-0.

“They [Newport] created no chances and then out of nothing – I think there was also a foul – but they score.

“Straight after half-time we make a mistake during defensive transition – not great.

“Then you have to start again to win this game but then we did – boys have done good.”

Asked how Newport got back in to the game, Ten Hag raged: “Maybe we went a bit slower but then we had chances for 3-0.

Garnacho the crossbar with two players across the goal and we had some shots from Antony as well, very good chances.

“They had nothing, really nothing, then out of nothing they score a goal.”

Man Utd were awarded with an away trip to Bristol City or Nottingham Forest in the next round.
