England hoping to convince Newcastle star Elliott Anderson to switch international allegiance back from rivals Scotland

But he previously represented the country of his birth at Under-19 level.

And now England would like him to play for them again for the Under-21s.

Should he be persuaded, Anderson would not be allowed to play for the Young Lions until the 2025 Euros qualifying campaign.

For England, that does not start until September, after they have competed in this summer’s finals in Georgia and Romania.

That is because he has already featured for Scotland in the 2023 campaign so is effectively cup-tied.

Highly-rated Anderson has made 16 appearances for Newcastle this season.

His most recent run-out came in last month’s League Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

He was an unused substitute during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester City.

The Magpies boss said of the midfielder in February: “The strength he has within him, we really believe in him.

“He’s got very good attributes and like all players, I think he would need a run in the team to really show his qualities but he can certainly play.”
