Fair warning: Emma D’Arcy’s Golden Globes glam ends in tears. At the 2023 Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 10, the “House of the Dragon” star shed the most beautiful tear we’ve ever seen. In addition to transforming their signature short hair from a fiery red to a deep indigo, a single shimmering teardrop escaped from their eye in a coordinating shade of blue.
According to D’Arcy’s makeup artist, Holly Silius, much of the inspiration for this emotional look came from the legendary filmmaker John Waters’s “Cry Baby” film. “I studied him for my dissertation at university, so I always go back to these raw images for personal inspiration of rebellion and paving your own way,” Silius said in a press release.
“After working with Emma and their stylist, Rose Forde, I knew the inspiration was going to be thoughtful and expressive with a confident but chic nature to it,” Silius said. “I knew Emma would own this look, effortlessly collaborating on the details with them.”
To achieve this kind of artistry on the red carpet, Silius used Shiseido products to help enhance the skin’s radiance but allowed the eyes to look a little more natural by using a combination of the Pop PowderGel Eyeshadow ($22) and Shimmer GelGloss ($25). “I love worn-in makeup so I let it naturally work its way into the creases and [kept] the skin flawless.”
To create the show-stopping tear, Silius used the Kajal InkArtist Shadow, Liner, Brow Pencil ($25), pulling the pigment down and adding more gloss on top. In collaboration with D’Arcy, Silius tapped into punk and new romantic references, balancing the edginess of the crying eyes with the softness of the face makeup. Worn with their new hair color, D’Arcy was art in motion on the red carpet. Read on to see how they brought the drama with their final look.
