Drivers urged not to neglect easy radiator check – it takes seconds & will stop you FREEZING in your motor this winter

AN expert mechanic has revealed the easy check you must make before driving this winter to avoid freezing in your motor.

Scotty Kilmer, who has over 50 years of experience in the motor industry, urged drivers not to neglect an often-forgotten maintenance essential as the weather turns cold.

Speaking exclusively with The Sun Online, Scotty emphasised the importance of keeping your radiator topped up to beat the chill.

He said: “Before you start your car check your radiator fluid because if it’s low, your heating won’t work.

“Your car might run fine but you won’t, so check your radiator’s full.”

It’s easily done, too, as all you need to do is pop the bonnet and find the coolant reservoir.

This is usually a translucent white container with a hose connecting it to a radiator.

Simply check that the amount of coolant inside sits between the minimum and maximum levels, which will be marked on the reservoir.

If it’s looking low, just unscrew the top and refill it to just below the maximum level.

Coolant costs around £7 for a large bottle that should last you for a good few months at least.

Just make sure to leave your car plenty of time to cool down after you have driven it or the coolant might be hot, potentially causing burns.

Scotty also recommended a couple of other key checks before setting out on chilly mornings.

He added: “Check your tyre pressure because when it gets cold outside, the pressure goes down.

“Check your wipers before it’s too late, make sure you’ve got a scraper in the boot.

“[Also] Make sure you’ve got a scraper because if you don’t, you’ll go to the auto parts store and guess what? They’re all out.”

It comes after Scotty previously revealed a free cleaning job that could make your motor run better in the winter.

Meanwhile, Wheeler Dealers host Mike Brewer shared a ten-second tip that he called “priority number one” for safe driving at this time of year.
