Drivers are only just realising there is an emergency switch that could save their lives

DRIVERS have been warned about an emergency switch that could save their lives.

Motors expert Tong shared the handy tip for “critical moments” on TikTok.

Motors whizz Tong revealed an emergency button that could save your lifetiktok

It can be used if your brake pedal failsTIKTOK

Tong explained what you should do in the terrifying event that your brakes fail while travelling at high speed.

He said: “In case of brake failure, don’t slam the steering wheel.

“Just remember this trick and it can save your life.”

Tong showed viewers how to apply the electronic parking brake while driving.

This is usually used, as the name suggests, while parking and has the same effect as a mechanical handbrake.

In most modern cars, the handbrake lever has been replaced with an electronic version operated by a switch as it requires less space.

If your brake pedal stops working, simply pull up and hold the switch until you come to a halt.

The life-saving button can most often be found on the central console by the gear stick and is marked with the letter P within a circle.

It is safer to use at speed than a mechanical handbrake, which can cause you to lose control of the car.

Tong added: “The vehicle will judge that the driver is operating in an emergency.

“The electronic handbrake will activate and help the vehicle slow down until it comes to a stop.”

However, drivers must bear in mind that you must hold the switch to activate the brake.

Modern cars have safety features which account for someone tapping the brake button by accident, so it will only work if you press and hold until the car stops.

You can tell it is active because a small light will often flick on above the switch when it is pressed.

Familiarise yourself with your car’s specific set-up, as some brake switches have to be pulled up rather than pressed.

Social media commenters were amazed by the trick.

One said: “That’s why you have an emergency brake.”

Another added: “So cool very interesting I will make sure to use it.”

It comes after a car salesman revealed three illegal tricks dealers use to bump up prices.

Meanwhile, an EV driver admitted he understands why people don’t like electric cars after owning one himself.
