Cold weather specialists from Lotus Car Rental Iceland explained that a cheap, everyday food item can hold the key to beating the deep freeze.
They said that drivers can use an onion as a preventative tool against frost.
The sugar molecules in the kitchen staple can break down ice crystals as soon as they form, the experts told The Mirror.
All you have to do is slice an onion in half and rub the exposed core vigorously against your windscreen and windows.
Do this the night before you drive and it should prevent the glass from icing up overnight, when the mercury is at its lowest.
Onions can be picked up from Tesco online for just 12p each.
If you don’t have one around the house already, a potato can apparently be just as effective.
Not only is it quick, cheap and easy, but it could also save you money in the long run, as driving with an iced-up window is actually an offence.
If your view is obscured, you could be collared for driving without due care and attention.
This usually carries a £100 fine and three licence points.
However, if you are involved in an accident and your case ends up in court, you could be facing a £5,000 fine and up to nine points, two-thirds of the amount required to trigger a driving ban.
The car whizzes also recommended using a vinegar solution on your windscreen to achieve the same effect.
They explained: “[Vinegar is] used as a de-icer because its freezing point is much lower than water’s, meaning the water doesn’t have the chance to settle and freeze on top of the vinegar.”
It comes after a woman who sleeps in her car shared a nifty heating gadget that keeps her warm in the winter.
Meanwhile, a traffic lawyer revealed one driving mistake you actually can’t be fined for.
