How the blue Model X car fell into the river Danube in Budapest last September, remains a mystery.

It is believed the car slid down the concrete boat ramp after the driver forgot to put it into park and enable the parking brake, according to Index.

A spokesperson of the National Directorate General of Disaster Prevention said at the time that firefighters were called to the scene but by the time they arrived, the car was already sunk.

The Pest County Search and Rescue Service were able to locate the vehicle underwater after searching with divers and sonar.

And even though the car sustained significant damage, its owner was reportedly able to sell it the following day for £20,000 (€22,000).

Pictures of the crew trying to pull the vehicle to the surface were posted on Reddit with users trying to guess how the accident happened.

One said: “How the hell did this happen?? The unattended car iust slid in somehow?”

Someone added: “In a car like a Tesla one needs to take explicit action to get out of the car and leave the thing in neutral with the handbrake off.

“Otherwise all of that auto engages when you get out of the car.”

One said: “The normal parking brake engages automatically. But you have to hold the park button on the stalk to engage the ebrake.”
