AN EXPERT car mechanic has shared his little-known tip that could save drivers “being ripped off”.
Scotty Kilmer, who’s remarkably been in the motors business for 56 years and has a dedicated YouTube channel, is a whizz at giving car owners tailor-made hacks that could save them hundreds.

With his latest trick, Scotty shows off a clever car diagnostic scan tool that can save motorists losing out when they visit their mechanic.
In the short clip, he says: “Let’s say your check engine light is on.
“Don’t go to a mechanic and say my check light engine is on and I don’t know what’s wrong with my car!”
Instead, drivers should purchase a car scan tool – like one you can buy from Halfords – for a one-off spend of £56.99.
Motorists can also purchase Bluetooth diagnostic scanners which can pair up with their Apple or Android devices.
As Scotty explains in the video, you can plug a scanner underneath your motor’s dashboard, and your phone or device will display what the fault with your car is.
Scotty explains: “Sure you’re not probably going to fix it yourself and you might have no idea what that means, but you can Google it.
“Or, you can watch my YouTube videos.”
By finding out the exact issue with your car, you can save yourself the risk of being taken for a ride by mechanics “looking to charge you for a variety of services you don’t need”.
He explained: “That sure beats the heck out of going in and saying ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with my car.’
“And they’re going to try and sell you everything under the sun.”
Scotty added: “You already have a magnificent smartphone – you don’t need to buy a $500 diagnostic machine.
“You already have it.”
This comes as a car-buying expert revealed the best sports motor you can buy for under £2,000, and it’s one that was recently discontinued.
And elsewhere a mechanic has revealed the “single most important item” you must keep in your car when visiting a garage – and it’s not fuel.
