Don McLean sounds as good today as he did five decades ago, when his hit song American Pie topped the Billboard charts and become an instant classic.
And audiences are still keen to have a slice.
“I feel the same as I always have – I feel ageless,” McLean told NBN News in his only Australian TV interview.

His love affair with our country goes back almost 50 years, to his first trip here.
“I think of Australia as another home to me, it’s so far beyond being another foreign country to me… it’s another neighbourhood,” McLean told NBN’s Gracie Richter.
Without a setlist, but with a catalogue of more than 100 songs, every night is different and he gives audiences an insight into his biggest hits.
On Wednesday night, McLean played a sold-out show at Twin Towns on the Queensland border, a place he loves, returning for three more shows this weekend.
“I love Surfers Paradise and the Gold Coast – I often thought about getting an apartment there,” he said.
McLean’s tour takes him through Northern NSW, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth and Newcastle all getting a show and a final chance to see a music icon.
The performer then plays a series of smaller venues through Sydney, Tasmania and Melbourne, before heading across to New Zealand.
As for what’s next for the legend after his tour? He says he’ll keep going, just as he’s done for the past five decades.
“I’m just gonna rock and roll keep travelling keep singing keep doing things – doors will open and I’ll walk through them, just like I’ve always done.”
