Disney+ launches cheap new plan to rival Netflix just in time for Christmas – but there are two catches

DISNEY+ has released its own ad-supported subscription plan – and it’s quite different to Netflix’s.

The movie powerhouse has only launched it in the US so far, with other countries like the UK set to follow next year.

APUsers will still be able to access Disney’s full catalogue, with shows like Andor[/caption]

It also coincides with a change in prices overall for US viewers.

The main premium subscription now costs $10.99 per month instead of $7.99.

To continue paying the old price, you’ll have to go for the ad-supported plan.

According to TechCrunch, ad breaks will range from 15 to 30 or 45 seconds long.

The total ad load will be limited to an average of four minutes per hour.

And content for preschool children will have no ads at all.

Netflix‘s US ad plan is a whole dollar less at $6.99.

But the offering is quite a bit different.

Disney owns all the content on Disney+ so is able to make all titles available to everyone.

Whereas some stuff is missing on ad-supported Netflix due to licensing issues – the firm’s boss recently said the blocked content only made up about 10 per cent of viewing time.

Disney’s also not holding back on video quality either, allowing everyone to access shows all the way up to 4K no matter what subscription plan they’re on.

Netflix has restricted their ad subscriber users to 720p.

Another key difference is Disney+ still allows up to four devices to watch at the same time – while Netflix only allows one.

One thing Disney+ Basic does have in common with Netflix Basic with ads is that you can’t download anything to watch offline.

GroupWatch, SharePlay and Dolby Atmos are also disabled at launch.

As Disney has other services in the US, users can get bundle offers too.
