Diogo Dalot sent off for bizarre reason as furious Man Utd fans slam ‘joke’ referee

MANCHESTER UNITED fans were as furious as Diogo Dalot after the defender’s bizarre red card at Liverpool.

The right-back was sent off for two yellow cards in five seconds – both for dissent – after protesting over a stoppage-time throw-in during a 0-0 draw.

Viewers argued Dalot was correct with his complaint but referee Michael Oliver dismissed him for remonstrating fiercely and repeating the offence.

United somehow nicked a point despite Liverpool amassing 34 efforts on goal at Anfield.

But fans were as amazed by Dalot’s “joke” sending-off as they were by Jurgen Klopp’s Reds failing to score.

One observer posted: “Wait!! Was he given a yellow twice for dissent? English refs have lost their minds.”

Another wrote: “Booked twice for dissent. Making it up as they go along.”

The ball appeared to come off Mo Salah last as the Liverpool striker tried to wriggle past Dalot down the left.

And the Portugal defender reacted with disbelief and anger when Oliver ruled against him.

Dalot’s heated protests earned him two bookings – but producing such a quickfire double yellow is NOT new to whistler Oliver.

He also sent off Arsenal‘s Gabriel Martinelli against Wolves in February 2022 in the space of just a few seconds.

The Brazil striker was booked for pushing Daniel Podence at a throw-in – then cautioned again for fouling Chiquinho moments later.

Ex-England striker Dion Dublin was one of many pundits to blast Oliver’s actions against Dalot.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: “He was absolutely fuming. He was right, it was a Man Utd throw but he kept reacting. Two cards in the space of two seconds, ridiculous!”

One fan sympathised with Dalot losing his cool, saying: “I swear. How can one control himself in situations like this.”

Another added: “Sent off for dissent twice in a few seconds is crazy.”
