Conor McGregor’s latest on UFC 300 as former rival says he would accept fight to ‘shut him up once and for all’

CONOR MCGREGOR could be on course for a shock UFC 300 showdown with Dustin Poirier.

The Notorious hasn’t set foot inside the octagon since breaking his left leg in his trilogy fight with his long-time rival two-and-a-half years ago.

McGregor, 35, is fighting fit after a long and arduous recovery and his long-overdue showdown with Michael Chandler is in contention to headline the promotion’s historic April card.

But former interim lightweight champion Poirier has thrown his hat into the ring to welcome the UFC‘s poster boy back to the octagon after getting wind of his recent “unfinished” business jibe.

He told UFC presenter Megan Olivi: “I probably would try to shut him up once and for all.

“But even if I slap his a** around again, he’s still gonna be chatting so we’ll see.”

The financial reward from a fourth fight with the sport’s biggest star aside, Poirier is more than happy with being 2-1 up in their series.

The Diamond said: “That’s a huge fight. [I’m] 2-1 against him, I don’t really see another reason for it.

“But it’d be a huge fight.”

Despite their dust-up being announced back in February, fan favourite Chandler still isn’t guaranteed to welcome former two-division champion McGregor back to action.

Poirier said of the delay in announcing the fight: “Is he and Chandler official? ‘What’s going on?”

Fan favourite Poirier hasn’t set foot inside the octagon since being knocked out in the second round of his BMF rematch with Justin Gaethje in August.

The UFC veteran is itching to bag a coveted spot on what will no doubt be a stacked 300 card

He said: “I missed [UFC] 200, I’m not gonna be around for 400, so that (UFC 300) would be very cool for me.

“Just have to see the landscape at that time. What’s gonna happen, I don’t know.

“I think I’m gonna fight beginning of next year, the opponent is what we’re looking for.”

UFC supremo Dana White has yet to reveal any fights for the card, although he recently admitted his matchmakers have tentative ideas in place for the historic event.

He said: “I think we have fights all the way made up until February 3rd or 10th, or something like that.

“And we’ve got ideas for March and April.”
