Commonly used repair shortcut risks setting your car on FIRE – spending the extra money is worth it

DRIVERS have been warned not to cut corners on repairs as a common hack risks causing a car fire.

Expert mechanic Scotty Kilmer urged motorists to shell out for full repairs or risk losing everything.

In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, he revealed that a cost-cutting trick could be putting more miserly drivers in danger.

It all comes down to a little-known quirk of newer cars – the fact that they use a mixture of nylon and plastic for fuel lines rather than metal or rubber.

Scotty explained: “If you don’t want your car to start on fire, don’t try using one of these nylon fuel system repair kits.

“Many modern cars use these nylon-plastic lines because they’re cheaper to build them.

“When they crack and leak I do not advise repairing them with a kit.”

The repair kit provides the fuel line connector, which as its name suggests connects the line to the tank, and a short length of fuel line.

Drivers can then remove the broken part of the line and connect the severed end to the replacement by melting the two together with a hairdryer.

It’s a cheaper and easier way to patch up a fuel line in the event of a leak.

However, Scotty claimed that these can increase the risk of the line rupturing and fuel burning within the engine bay, with potentially devastating consequences.

Instead, he advised: “If you’re going to replace nylon fuel lines, buy the whole thing with one end that plugs in and the other end that plugs into the other port.

“It’s going to cost more but it’s the only safe way to fix broken nylon fuel lines.”

The best thing to do is to contact your local garage and have the new lines professionally installed.

Social media commenters were fully behind Scotty on this one, too.

One wrote: “Good advice Scotty, dead on with that one.”

Another added: “Scotty is a treasure.”

It comes after Hyundai announced that it was “preparing for the future” with amazing James-Bond style snow tyre tech.
